PostHoward named Glenorchy coach

Byron Howard has been announced as the new coach of Glenorchy, Howard who was the Assistant under Ben Reid last season. Howard was given the nod yesterday, the Magpies looked at getting former Melbourne high-flyer Russell Robertson to the club, recently he became seniors for the St Joseph's football team in the Geelong Football League.

Howard has a long list of accolades in his football career, and post football career he has managed to make a life of coaching. He lead the Brighton Football Club to a premiership in the SFL in 1998, he was also the Reserves and Assistant coach for North Hobart.

Byron Howard was also involved with the State Under 16 Program, at North Hobart, Howard brings a wealth of football experience with him, and a small bit of that experience has been as a coach later in life.

As a footballer Howard was a two-time premiership player at North Hobart claiming a premiership in 1991 and 1992. Howard as also one of North Hobart's greatest full forwards, Glenorchy fans will remember Howard more for his playing days then his coaching.

The big forward would break Magpies supporters hearts throughout the 1990s with his Demons, 1993 Byron Howard and his Demons ran riot against the Magpies in the 1993 First Semi Final.

Howards job was made easier yesterday when star Magpies Jake Cox, and Daniel Muir re-signed with the club for the 2011 season. The Magpies were looking at signing a coach with AFL experience, but now have a coach with a lot of development experience, and State League experience.

Howard will now look at bringing some players to the club that will help the club move forward in 2011. While the Magpies made the 2010 finals, they never really got off the mark, and in 2011 the Magpies will hope to fly again.

Glenorchy are waiting on news from Jason Akermanis who has said he will give the club news before Christmas, the club will also be waiting on the leagues decision regarding the salary caps for the 2011 State League.
